You’re Full of SH*T: Why Prioritizing Gut Health Is Essential

I know what I am about to tell you might be a strange visual image but hear me out. Your gut is your second brain. The two organs have different, but overlapping functions to keep you healthy and happy. Everything in the human body is connected in some way, and there is no better example than the link between your brain and your gut.

If you experience any of the following on the regular:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Poor digestion
  • Bloating
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • Inflammation and joint pain

…may all be rooted in an unhealthy gut! Think about it like this – if your body is holding on to waste and toxins in your digestive system and gut, that junk is effectively circulating throughout your whole body via your bloodstream.

Our bodies are made to deal with and filter out toxins, but when waste is languishing in your intestines, colon, and digestive system due to unhealthy gut function, you are making your body work way too hard. This takes a toll over time, potentially causing all those unpleasant symptoms.

These symptoms are responses to the waste trapped in your body. When you have less waste in your digestive system all of your organs – including your brain – can spend more time operating perfectly, thereby eliminating some of those difficult symptoms caused by an unhealthy gut. The waste sitting in your body just weighs you down – literally!?

Getting your body to work better, instead of harder, requires some extra TLC for your gut. Taking steps toward better gut health includes getting good probiotics, colonics (they are not scary – I swear!), moving your body, eating a gut-friendly diet, and boosting detox functions. Taking the time to set yourself up with healthy gut treatments and adjusting your diet will do wonders for your gut and therefore your overall well being! Ensuring you have a symbiotic balance in your body starts with prioritizing your gut!

So many symptoms that people experience could be and probably are related to gut health and can be resolved with holistic care as opposed to pharmaceuticals. Not only can medication be expensive, but sometimes its side effects don’t make us feel so hot. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, I would encourage you to start by focusing on effectively healing your gut to improve your wellbeing.

I’ve been through and am still on the gut-healing journey! I’ve met so many caring, knowledgeable experts along the way, and I am so looking forward to sharing their wisdom with you. La Vie en Rose: Why You Should Be Drinking Rose Tea ASAP

Is the hype over rose-infused items qualified? Especially rose tea, I mean, is that even necessary?

In so many words, yes and definitely!

Tea made from the petals and buds of roses deserves a spot in your tea stash. I believe it also serves as a perfectly pleasant, warming, and relaxing tea for the winter season. In addition to feeling fancy and luxurious, rose tea actually has some excellent benefits for your body – 2020 and beyond!

Ingredients drawn from members of the rosa botanical family are notoriously powerful for their soothing and moisturizing qualities. Similarly to how rosehip seed oil and rosewater blends can effectively provide moisturize for combination skin, rose tea can help hydrate your skin from the inside out as well.

The antioxidants found in rosa plants are typically used to combat acne and soothe the skin in various external body-suitable products, but there are similar results can also be achieved when the rose petals and rosebuds are brewed, steeped, and consumed as a tea.

Rose tea, first of all, smells divine. Smelling and sipping it aids almost immediately in relaxation. Additionally, it can be soothing for your nervous and digestive systems, sometimes getting your digestion back in gear, and even helping to regulate imbalances in your central nervous systems.

As a digestive aid, rose tea is also effective as a detox infusion – and one that actually tastes good. I think probably we have all been there – with a tea or herbal infusion that is great for our kidneys, liver, digestion, but tastes…tough. These teas are great to get down and really get a strong cleanse, but maybe not every day.

Rose tea, on the other hand, is delicious, soothing, and a completely manageable daily detox for your body. A drink you can look forward to brewing, inhaling, and sipping, I can assure you!

Rose is also rumored to have a certain aphrodisiac quality to it, so hey, maybe it’s a good thing to try out for Valentine’s Day if nothing else?

Rose tea on its own is fairly fragrant, floral, and somewhat sweet, but you can always add a sweetener if you’d like. My choice would be honey, which always offers a nicely balanced addition of sweetness, plus antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

On its own, it is naturally decaffeinated, but you can find it mixed with black or white tea blends if you are looking for a little added kick.

Tea Sparrow has an amazing tea blend called Moments which features rosebuds, perfectly paired with a light aromatic black tea base to elevate the soft and luxurious flavor of the rose, raspberry, and subtleties of mango. It’s both warm and reminiscent of tropical flavors, making it a nice winter pick me up.

In addition to getting some new teas into your healthy, warming, delicious beverage rotation, I would love if you shared your New Year, New You goals with me on Instagram! I love answering your questions, so please give me a shout if there is anything you need to succeed.

What Are Chakras And How Are They Related To Your Wellbeing?

So, you have probably heard the word “chakra” before – am I right? It’s definitely a word that gets thrown around a lot, but what are they, and what are they connected to exactly?

The word chakra (pronounced cha-kra) in Sanskrit means a “disk” or “orb,” and refers to the seven energy centers that are found in the human body, along the spine and up through the top of the head. These energy centers not only correspond to emotional aspects of our lives, to organs and certain areas of the body, but are also closely intertwined with our nervous systems. Chakras are essentially points at which human bodies have large networks of nerve bundles.

Even though the concept of chakras was derived from Vedic teachings dating back to 50 B.C. and from historical Ayurvedic practice, it actually blends perfectly with what modern, Western medicine knows today to be true. Vedic teachings illustrate the way in which chakras, when open, create a healthy flow of energy that creates balance, overall wellness, and vitality in a person. These areas of chakra placement are actually correlated to key points in your nervous system. Cool, I know!

Now that you know how they are related to an intrinsic part of your body – the nervous system – let’s cover where and what the seven chakras actually are…

Root Chakra

Also known as the Muladhara (moo-lah-dar-ah) or the first chakra, it can be thought of as “rooting” you to safety and security, and is found in the area around the lowest part of your spine, near your bladder, and colon. Like roots that hold a tree in the ground, the root chakra is all about standing tall and proud as we exist in the world. When this chakra is open, you may feel brave, safe, secure, and more ready for new things.

Sacral Chakra

Found below your navel, but above your pubic bone the Svadhisthana (swa-dhi-shtah-na), or second chakra, is the center of your sexual and creative energies. When this chakra is open, you may feel extra passionate and possess a strong willingness or drive to express yourself in creative forms.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The Manipura (ma-ni-poo-rah), third chakra is found in your core, between your navel and your breastbone. The word Manipura in Sanskrit translates to “luminous gem” and is believed to ignite your personal source of power. This makes sense, as when we think about core strength we think about the part of our body that gives us the most power, as well as the ability to stand strong and tall. When this chakra is open you may feel confident and strong in all you do!

Heart Chakra

Located in the center of your chest, nearly in the middle of your spine is the fourth chakra, anahata (ah-na-ha-tah). This fourth chakra connects the emotional, physical, mindful, and spiritual qualities of a person. It also acts as a source of connection between what are thought of as the three “lower” energies, chakras 1-3, and the “higher” energies, chakras 5-7. When your heart chakra is open you may feel very connected to others, open to love, and more drawn toward compassion.

Throat Chakra

The Vishuddha (vi-shoo-dah) chakra is the fifth chakra, and encompasses the area around your throat. This chakra is associated with communication and vocal expression. This chakra also includes the thyroid, mouth, jaw, and tongue. When your throat chakra is open you may feel more empowered to share opinions, communicate openly, and speak your truth more freely.

Third Eye Chakra

The sixth chakra, Ajna (ah-jnah), is between the eyebrows, in the space between your eyes. Ajna is the energy center that guides your intuition, or your power to know and perceive things in and about the world. When this chakra is open you may be more inclined to listen to your intuition and allow your internal knowledge to guide you through the world.

Crown Chakra

The seventh chakra, Sahaswara (sa-ha-srA-ra), can be found at the crown, or very top of your head. This is the chakra of spiritual thought and connection with ourselves, the world around us, and divinity or higher spirituality. When this chakra is open – which can be difficult to maintain all the time – you may feel at your most creative capacity, capable of feeling your highest level of understanding and spirituality.

3 simple ways to stay committed to living your best life in 2020

It’s a new decade (wow, excuse me, whaaat??), a new year, and OMG a brand new you, too?!

The new year is such an empowering time. People are into their health and wellness goals, feeling hopeful, have had a lovely festive time and then…what happens again…?

Oh, yeah. Life happens. So how can you stay committed to living your best life, even in spite of, ya know, normal life things happening all around you? Here are some tips that I have long advised patients, clients, and students on to guide them to successful habit shifting and killer, killer results on their journey.

Sustainability = Success

Regardless of your best intentions, it’s really hard to go from 0 to 100 real, real quick. If yoga, working out, and mobility training are new to you, that’s okay! But, be sure you are setting a reasonable goal for yourself.

Life is already a lot to handle. So many random struggles and annoying things — Can I get an AMEN? You really do not need to make your life harder. This is why I have structured my courses and free videos with a realistic progression to help you build new habits that you can easily stick with. Not diving in with an hour per day, every day. That’s too much (and honestly, who has the time?!)

You want to think in terms of what is sustainable for you, your life, and your schedule, not make a plan around what sounds good in theory, but will actually make your life difficult.

Rest Up

Truthfully, your body really does need rest. If you tucker yourself out and exhaust yourself doing 3 hour workouts every day two weeks you are going to:

  1. A) hurt yourself and
  2. B) need a full week to recover from that crazy “training.”

This is not a healthy option, nor is it sustainable. Make sure that you are resting and recharging, especially if you are working out and activating new muscles. We do not need to go hard every day of the week.

Just Keep Moving

No matter what your health and wellness goals are if you want to improve your comfort, quality of life, range of motion, and mobility you need to keep moving. Even if you’re not doing a full workout every day, you can always do something quick like this Heart Reset Flow to keep your joints and muscles from getting stiff or cramped.

Desk jobs, long commutes, and more may be keeping you somewhat immobile, but you want mobility and decreased tension so do the grapevine in the hallway, moonwalk to the water cooler, get creative!

Do whatever it takes to keep active and move a little more each and every day. Soon, it will be habitual to make sure your body is grooving daily.

And of course, don’t forget about the incredible BOGO SPECIAL I’m offering this month:

New Year, Who Dis? How to eliminate pain and start feeling amazing in 2020

Raise your hand if you have ever been prevented from doing something because of pain?

Oh, I see you. You raised your hand, right?

When you’re uncomfortable, for a short while or chronically, it’s not always easy to say “yes” to everything enthusiastically. Sometimes even small nagging pains make going for a walk, spending the day with friends, working out, or getting cozy so difficult.

And I understand. With that comes frustration, fear of missing out, and just feeling very…blah. Dealing with discomfort can be really discouraging.

The bottom line is that no one likes being uncomfortable and no one enjoys being inhibited from living their lives. And thankfully, there is no need for it to be that way.

I have so many clients and students who have experienced incredible results after putting in just a little extra time to really stretch and heal in a safe way. My methodology is not just about yoga, although yes, yoga is amazing. It’s about using yoga and physical therapy techniques to heal your aches and pains in the most effective way.

If you’re ready to shimmy your way into 2020 with a “New Year, Who Dis?” attitude then you are absolutely in the right place! Congratulations, you made it!

So, what are the very first steps you need to take to eliminate pain and start loving life in 2020?

First, let’s talk about shifting your focus. If you’re constantly dwelling on how much pain you are in and how much tension you are feeling, that can make it really hard to relax. It might sound silly, and I know pain can be an overwhelming sensation, but relaxing even in the face of pain is an important step toward allowing yourself to fully heal.

Try this…

Take a really deep breath in, and as you exhale visualize yourself relaxing. Know that everything is going to be okay. You are going to be okay.

Continue to inhale deeply, acknowledging the areas and places where you are experiencing pain, and as you exhale completely and empty out your lungs, be conscious of softening into a place of relaxation.

In this more relaxed state, I guarantee that you will be able to think more positively about educating yourself and gifting yourself with greater mobility and greater comfort. You can do this and you will do this!

Next, get into the new year groove (new decade groove to be more accurate) by spending some time with me and this healing, restorative Heart Reset Flow to shake off 2019 and get ready to make 2020 your…BFF! This flow is for all levels of skill, and designed to get you into a clear, peaceful state of mind.

2020? You got this on lock!

Stay Balanced: Holiday Edition 2020

Here we are. December! In my last blog post, I focused on what steps you can take to help your body stay healthy during the holidays. There are so many things that drain our energy this time of year, and it’s important that you know how to balance it all and stay well.

But, there are honestly so many reasons your body can feel out of whack this season.

Maybe it’s the excess of food, maybe it’s the travel, maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s all the running around, maybe work is wild, or maybe the holidays are just a tough time for whatever reason that may be. Whatever the cause, I want you to know that you are not alone in feeling worn out by this month. I feel pretty confident that for one reason or another, the holidays are hard on everyone.

Even so, there is a lot to be grateful for and a lot to celebrate! Celebrating your victories, getting excited about the new year ahead and spending time with those you love.  Looking back on how far you’ve come is so important, and taking the time to focus on those positives can hopefully help take some of the stress away and bring you joy.

If staying in good health seems like it might be a challenge while you’re traveling, visiting, and celebrating – that’s okay! I have some solid advice for staying balanced this holiday season.

Get Moving

Getting some type of motion in each day and exercising is so important. Exercise can ward off feelings of anxiety, help you feel calmer, and is, of course, great for our overall health and wellbeing. Gentle movements and yoga will be super useful if you are feeling stiff from flights or time in the car, and even just going for a quick walk or run can help you clear your head and work up a sweat.

You don’t have to jeopardize the things you like about the holidays in order to achieve a good balance and fit in some daily exercise. Invite family and friends to exercise with you or invite them to stretch or do some gentle yoga.

Simple as A, B, C

Make sure you are getting your vitamins! Either taking them as supplements or eating foods in which key vitamins and nutrients naturally occur will help keep you feeling good. Some of my personal favorites this time of year are:

  • Vitamin A: found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and lots of types of winter squash, its probably easy to find something full of vitamin A on any holiday dinner table. Vitamin A is vital to your immune system and pairs well with vitamin C in helping you ward off common ailments.
  • Vitamin B: B-complex vitamins have so many benefits, including increased energy, better immune function, and stronger mental clarity. If you’re eating almonds, avocados, and leafy greens, you’re getting your B vitamins in!
  • Vitamin C: found in citrus, lemons, peppers, and brussel sprouts, vitamin C will boost your immunity and help you fight any infections or viruses you might be exposed to.

Even with all the craziness, fueling your body with good nutrients and keeping active will help you find and maintain balance this holiday season. I promise that taking just a little extra time to eat something healthy and move your body will have a huge payoff in helping you feel good the whole season long!

I’d love to invite you to join me on Instagram for even more holiday wellness tips, and don’t miss out on the opportunity to enter to win the incredible Holiday Giveaway, which includes a delicious selection of tea from Tea Sparrow and a FREE course from me!!

Also, check out how you can maximize mobility in your shoulders with just a few minutes each day. You’ll see immediate improvement. Perfect for loosening up after periods of extended holiday travel!

Stay well!

How to Get Rid Of “Holiday Hangover”

Aside from getting your flu shot and having Vitamin C supplements at the ready, what else can you do to stay healthy and happy during the holidays?

The basics are this: get enough sleep, stay hydrated, move your body.

Getting enough sleep may be easier said than done, but it is so, so essential. If you’re feeling fatigued, every part of your body is going to feel it too. In order to keep all the functions of your body in top condition, you have to get enough rest.

At least 8 hours is recommended, but let’s be honest…how many of us actually get that much?

But, did you know that while you are sleeping your body does most of its healing?  So, cutting into that sleep you need can really take a toll on your health. Think about it — do you want muscle recovery, digestion, or detoxification working at a sluggish rate?

 Nope.

Ideally never! And definitely not during the holidays when there are so many yummy foods, desserts, and drinks to indulge in. You want everything functioning at full capacity to enjoy the holidays in good health, even if we snack on a few too many cookies shaped like snowmen!

If you’re somewhere chilly or if you’re lucky enough to be in warmer weather for the holidays, it’s probably not quite reaching summertime heat levels wherever you are this month. Drinking water and iced coffee can be so easy when the sun is scorching hot or you’re enjoying the beach, but sometimes as the weather cools down we have a tendency toward not maintaining adequate water intake.

Drinking water not only helps maintain normal organ function and cell growth, but it is also a key piece of flushing your system and aiding your liver and kidneys in your body’s natural detox processes.

The average recommended water intake per day is 8-10 glasses per day.  (That sounds like a whole lot of trips to the toilet if you ask me!)

Whether its sweets, a few cocktails, or half a cheesecake that your body needs to flush out, drinking plenty of water will help this process tremendously. I’m a believer in living your life and enjoying that second (or third) helping of your favorite holiday food, but I think you can agree that feeling bloated after eating too much is never, ever fun.

Water, even with a squeeze of lemon or lime for some extra vitamin C, can help with stimulating digestion and flushing your system. Keep a water bottle on hand, find a water source at every party you attend, and be sure to drink a huge glass of water right when you wake up and right before you go to sleep.

One of the body’s best detox mechanisms is the lymphatic system, which is stimulated almost purely by movement. Exercise, walking, massage, and yoga are all great ways to stimulate the lymphatic system.

Twists, gentle movement, and gentle stretching is beneficial for the lymphatic system and will ultimately help boost digestion and strengthen your immune system. I’m sure you’re completely out of Thanksgiving leftovers by now, so if you want to get your lymphatic system pumping and feel totally refreshed, try out this Turkey Day Detox Flow!

The holiday season is always crazy, so we all need to be sure we are providing our bodies (and minds!) with a little extra TLC. Get some extra sleep, drink a ton of water, and be sure you’re moving each and every day!

I’d love to invite you to join me on Instagram for even more information on holiday health this coming Workout Wednesday, where I’ll explain how we can use yoga to help ease anxiety. And keep an eye out for an exciting Holiday Giveaway announcement coming up soon….!
