Cuckoo for Coconut Water

You’ve probably seen various brands of coconut water in the grocery store, gas station, health food store, the neighborhood bodega – it’s basically everywhere.

And for good reason! Coconut water is full of potassium and magnesium, both of which are vital nutrients for healthy organ function and useful in supporting muscle recovery and lubricating your joints effectively. Truly, the perfect workout drink!

When you’re sweating and exercising, you want to be replacing electrolytes into your body. Through sweating and activity, your body utilizes and sweats out certain important nutrients. To aid in recovery and to combat potential fatigue, refueling those electrolytes is super important.

Potassium and magnesium are excellent for muscle recovery and combatting fatigue after some serious exercise. Sodium, still an important electrolyte, can also be found in coconut water, although not in as high of an amount as other electrolyte beverages.

And unlike other popular sports drinks and electrolyte beverages, coconut water isn’t loaded with tons of sugars, dyes, or excess ingredients. Oftentimes those sports drinks have extra carbs, calories, and sugars that you just don’t need. Of all the electrolyte-filled beverage options on the market, coconut water is for sure the healthiest. Keep it simple with coconut water and give your body only what it really needs.

In addition to being a great drink during and after workouts, I actually love coconut water in smoothies as well, as it gives an extra boost of magnesium and potassium while keeping the flavor the same. Sometimes adding milk substitutes like almond milk and oat milk, among others can make a smoothie feel heavy or dense, whereas coconut water keeps it really light, refreshing, and hydrating. Sometimes that super creamy smoothie is what you’re craving, other times maybe you’re in the mood for something lighter. In those instances, coconut water does the trick!

I have a habit of drinking a ton of coconut water when I’m in Tulum, MX to help beat the heat and recharge from time working out or time in the sun.

For skincare, coconut and coconut water is definitely trending as an active ingredient. One creative tip for hydrating your face with coconut is to utilize it as a facial spray, especially in hot and humid weather. You can refrigerate a tiny spray bottle, being sure to refresh the coconut water and clean the bottle every 7-10 days.

Coconut water is now super accessible, great for replenishing electrolytes lost through sweating, and packed with potassium and magnesium for joint protection and muscle recovery!

Try out my favorite Muscle Recovery Smoothie:

1/2 an avocado from Mexico

1 cup fresh pineapple (frozen works too)

1/2 medium banana

1/2 tsp ground turmeric

1 cup coconut water

3–4 ice cubes

  • Blend until smooth. Enjoy!

How to Heal Your Gut: Consider Colonics

While your body has natural mechanisms and processes for detoxing, sometimes these systems can feel a bit sluggish, especially when it comes to digestion. Ultimately, poor digestion can lead to:

  • Skin trouble
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Water retention
  • Brain fog
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation
  • Depression
  • Headaches and more!

There are many ways to jumpstart and clean out your digestive system, but one of my favorite methods is colon hydrotherapy.

Also referred to as a colonic, think about this as a clean flush for your gut. Similar to an enema, a colonic provider will help you get rid of built-up waste and residue by flushing your system with water. Pretty simple. And think about it, many cultures have utilized enemas, even dating back to the ancient Egyptians, to restore health, vitality, and treat illness.

I know, it’s a little gross to think about. But, isn’t the thought of junk and waste just chilling, setting up camp, and moving into your intestines and colon even more disgusting? I mean, think about the food you ate three weeks ago.

Particles of the pizza you had three weeks ago…rotting somewhere in your digestive tract is not a pleasant thought. Your digestive system isn’t built like pipes that make up the plumbing in your house. It’s not all just perfectly smooth surface area. Instead, your intestines have thousands of nooks and crannies, grooves, small pockets, and tiny spaces where toxic junk can get stuck as it moves through your digestive system.

The act of filling your bowels with clean water, holding the water for a bit to give your insides a soak, and then effectively rinsing everything out will help you eliminate some of the really old bits of waste that have made their home in the lining of your colon. Yeah, it gets a bit of a bad reputation for being “icky” but storing that toxic waste is way more disgusting and problematic.

As colonics are intended to give your body a thorough cleaning, I would advise staying very hydrated both before and after. Be sure to get some powerful probiotics in you afterward to restore a healthy bacterial balance. And while you don’t need to constantly be getting colonics, they are a really useful tool for helping your body detox and recharge, getting those stagnant bits of waste out of there!

You’re Full of SH*T: Why Prioritizing Gut Health Is Essential

I know what I am about to tell you might be a strange visual image but hear me out. Your gut is your second brain. The two organs have different, but overlapping functions to keep you healthy and happy. Everything in the human body is connected in some way, and there is no better example than the link between your brain and your gut.

If you experience any of the following on the regular:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Poor digestion
  • Bloating
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • Inflammation and joint pain

…may all be rooted in an unhealthy gut! Think about it like this – if your body is holding on to waste and toxins in your digestive system and gut, that junk is effectively circulating throughout your whole body via your bloodstream.

Our bodies are made to deal with and filter out toxins, but when waste is languishing in your intestines, colon, and digestive system due to unhealthy gut function, you are making your body work way too hard. This takes a toll over time, potentially causing all those unpleasant symptoms.

These symptoms are responses to the waste trapped in your body. When you have less waste in your digestive system all of your organs – including your brain – can spend more time operating perfectly, thereby eliminating some of those difficult symptoms caused by an unhealthy gut. The waste sitting in your body just weighs you down – literally!?

Getting your body to work better, instead of harder, requires some extra TLC for your gut. Taking steps toward better gut health includes getting good probiotics, colonics (they are not scary – I swear!), moving your body, eating a gut-friendly diet, and boosting detox functions. Taking the time to set yourself up with healthy gut treatments and adjusting your diet will do wonders for your gut and therefore your overall well being! Ensuring you have a symbiotic balance in your body starts with prioritizing your gut!

So many symptoms that people experience could be and probably are related to gut health and can be resolved with holistic care as opposed to pharmaceuticals. Not only can medication be expensive, but sometimes its side effects don’t make us feel so hot. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, I would encourage you to start by focusing on effectively healing your gut to improve your wellbeing.

I’ve been through and am still on the gut-healing journey! I’ve met so many caring, knowledgeable experts along the way, and I am so looking forward to sharing their wisdom with you. When You Get That Feeling, You Need…Hamstring Healing

How many times in my career have I heard about unbearable, tight, fatigued hamstrings? Literally countless.

The group of muscles in your upper thigh, particularly your hamstring, can be so easy to strain and so difficult to properly heal. Releasing the tension in your hamstrings is a way to bring mobility and comfort back to that area of your leg and ease much of the discomfort associated with long-term tension.

The hamstrings are part of the superficial back line of fascia, which means they are built with more endurance muscle fibers. Endurance muscle fibers, also known as slow-twitch fibers, are meant to be more resilient and durable. These fibers that make up our hamstrings do not fatigue easily and provide us with necessary support and stability for posture. So, naturally, there will always be some tightness in your hamstrings to help you hold yourself upright and help propel your body forward while you walk.

The problem is when they get too tight, causing hamstring strains, general discomfort, and decreased mobility. Sometimes the hamstring will get so tight it will actually pull your pelvis down and into a backward tilted position. This creates too much strain on the lower back and can be the cause of a lot of chronic discomfort or pain.

Does any of this sound familiar…?

I would venture to guess it probably does.  So, how do you actually loosen up those super tight hamstrings that plague so many of us?

One simple yoga pose you can try is called “legs up the wall” or “waterfall pose.” This pose I find just straight up relaxing, in addition to helping stretch out the legs. Try it in three simple steps to feel a nice stretch:

  1. Scootch your booty so it is flush with a stable wall
  2. Climb your legs up the wall until they are flat against it, or modify as needed by bending your knees to ensure you are comfortable
  3. Hang out here for a minute or more, breathing and relaxing into the pose, feeling a comfortable stretch in the back of your thighs

One of the best things you can do, weekly if possible, is to devote some time to targeted hamstring release techniques. Targeting and really thoroughly stretching your hamstrings at least once each week will ensure you are making progress over time and seeing results in the form of decreased pain, lower back, and pelvic alignment, and much less leg fatigue. Set aside a minute to really get some solid work in, stretch with me, and get loosey-goosey hamstrings in under 20 minutes! I’ll guide you through every step to ensure you are maximizing the benefit of each movement throughout this sequence.

Last but not least, check out today’s Fix Yourself Fridays on my Instagram for another super-fast method for stretching those hamstrings. Let me know if you have any questions about effectively opening up your hammies, or if there are any other muscle groups you’d like to learn more about releasing from tension!

Stay Balanced: Holiday Edition 2020

Here we are. December! In my last blog post, I focused on what steps you can take to help your body stay healthy during the holidays. There are so many things that drain our energy this time of year, and it’s important that you know how to balance it all and stay well.

But, there are honestly so many reasons your body can feel out of whack this season.

Maybe it’s the excess of food, maybe it’s the travel, maybe it’s the weather, maybe it’s all the running around, maybe work is wild, or maybe the holidays are just a tough time for whatever reason that may be. Whatever the cause, I want you to know that you are not alone in feeling worn out by this month. I feel pretty confident that for one reason or another, the holidays are hard on everyone.

Even so, there is a lot to be grateful for and a lot to celebrate! Celebrating your victories, getting excited about the new year ahead and spending time with those you love.  Looking back on how far you’ve come is so important, and taking the time to focus on those positives can hopefully help take some of the stress away and bring you joy.

If staying in good health seems like it might be a challenge while you’re traveling, visiting, and celebrating – that’s okay! I have some solid advice for staying balanced this holiday season.

Get Moving

Getting some type of motion in each day and exercising is so important. Exercise can ward off feelings of anxiety, help you feel calmer, and is, of course, great for our overall health and wellbeing. Gentle movements and yoga will be super useful if you are feeling stiff from flights or time in the car, and even just going for a quick walk or run can help you clear your head and work up a sweat.

You don’t have to jeopardize the things you like about the holidays in order to achieve a good balance and fit in some daily exercise. Invite family and friends to exercise with you or invite them to stretch or do some gentle yoga.

Simple as A, B, C

Make sure you are getting your vitamins! Either taking them as supplements or eating foods in which key vitamins and nutrients naturally occur will help keep you feeling good. Some of my personal favorites this time of year are:

  • Vitamin A: found in carrots, sweet potatoes, and lots of types of winter squash, its probably easy to find something full of vitamin A on any holiday dinner table. Vitamin A is vital to your immune system and pairs well with vitamin C in helping you ward off common ailments.
  • Vitamin B: B-complex vitamins have so many benefits, including increased energy, better immune function, and stronger mental clarity. If you’re eating almonds, avocados, and leafy greens, you’re getting your B vitamins in!
  • Vitamin C: found in citrus, lemons, peppers, and brussel sprouts, vitamin C will boost your immunity and help you fight any infections or viruses you might be exposed to.

Even with all the craziness, fueling your body with good nutrients and keeping active will help you find and maintain balance this holiday season. I promise that taking just a little extra time to eat something healthy and move your body will have a huge payoff in helping you feel good the whole season long!

I’d love to invite you to join me on Instagram for even more holiday wellness tips, and don’t miss out on the opportunity to enter to win the incredible Holiday Giveaway, which includes a delicious selection of tea from Tea Sparrow and a FREE course from me!!
