Yoga is Magic! Why Yoga Is For Everyone, At Every Age

Let me reassure you, you don’t need to be super flexible, limber, young, or athletic to do yoga. A completely common misconception, but not true. Yoga is the perfect way to strengthen, tone, and heal your body, creating a better, more comfortable life for you in both the short and long term. The reason why my methodology combines yoga and rehabilitative mobility work is that both are very accessible for every level of skill.

Yoga doesn’t take any special skills or knowledge, just a willingness to move your body and a commitment to working toward improved mobility. If you’re young, but feel out of shape or unflexible – I can assure you, that doesn’t matter. I have helped over 125,000 clients and students overcome strength and mobility issues with progressive flows to relieve pain and stiffness.

As people age, there tends to be a very real risk of “use it or lose it” when it comes to muscle. Sarcopenia, or muscle loss due to aging, can affect overall mobility and strength. With more muscle mass and more strength comes better mobility and greater comfort. Muscle loss can be hard on joints, creating more stiffness and resulting in less mobility over time.

This is why something accessible, gentle, and beginner-friendly is useful for those looking to gain increased mobility and strength even later in life! Starting yoga later in life is honestly manageable at any age; there are so many modifications and progressions that I employ in all my courses and trainings to be sure that everyone, no matter their skill set, is able to learn and practice safely.

Plus, just like all of my courses, yoga practice is easy to implement at home. You can avoid wasted time trekking back and forth to the gym — saving your energy and money while still achieving your best life! No one needs to do yoga for multiple hours a day to see improvements. I structure my courses to fit neatly into your busy life – no one has time to spend hours per day doing yoga and working out!

If you want to improve your mobility and live a life free of pain, I invite you to get started with Yoga Prehab today!

The membership includes 100+ hours of body-saving content, you’ll get an amazing new course each and every month that targets every area of your body, in addition to wellness wisdom, tools for support and accountability, expert interviews and pain relief tutorials. Do Plant Based Diets Live Up To The Hype?

There are so many diet trends out there and it seems like even more are popping up every year. Yikes! How to pick which ones are valid can tough.  For me, I like the idea of plant based eating, and have found it actually makes eating healthy, filling, and stress-free meals really simple

Eating should be fun. Not complicated. Not stressful or super expensive. Prioritizing plants when thinking about your meals is essentially all a plant based diet is. Your base of pretty much every meal should be derived from plants, but you are free to eat meat, dairy, and other animal products as you see fit. Focusing on a plant diet can help make your life a little bit simpler in the following ways.

You Get Those Greens: When you start planning or making each meal and your base is veggies, you will be guaranteed to get all those bright, essential colors into your diet. Basing the contents of your plate around 3-4 vegetables or plant based products will usually get more veggies in your diet than basing your meals off of an animal protein source.

Easier Digestion: Meat and cheese and animal products typically require a lot of energy to digest. The fats and structure of these items sometimes take longer to break down and may move slowly through your digestive system. Eating plant based items is usually a little easier on your digestion.

That said, always be sure you have enough healthy fats and oil with your vegetables. Healthy fat sources such as olive oil, avocado oil, and coconut oil have potent health benefits and will help the plant products move through your system, making digestion easier.

Also, note that some people may experience certain sensitivities when eating larger quantities of legumes, lentils, or raw vegetables. Eat what is appropriate for your body, and if you have concerns about a food sensitivity you can always consult a dietician, doctor, or holistic nutritionist.

If raw food is making you bloated – first be sure you are drinking enough water and getting enough of those healthy fats in. Try cooking your veggies – steaming, roasting, making soups – or eat some of your meals with a mild carbohydrate, like rice, which can assist in digestion. Cooked vegetables are good, too – remember, this is not a raw only diet, so get creative with preparation, spices, and flavors!

Mindful Eating: First of all, the production of pretty much all food takes some water. Cows, almonds, chickens, soy, corn. Everything needs water. Animal products usually require slightly more – their food needs water, they need water, the production of animal products usually requires a lot of water. So, refraining from some meat products can be a good way to eat consciously.

Buying vegetables and plant based ingredients, especially from local sources, can also cut down on fossil fuels used in transport and delivery. Another win for the environment!

Less Limiting: With plant-based diets, you can still eat bacon (though not recommended). You can still roast a chicken and make chicken soup. You can put parmesan on your pasta. Committing to plant based is really just thinking about your meals and eating habits in a way that prioritizes vegetables and plant based ingredients. Not swearing off cheese forever, or only allowing yourself to eat at certain times, or anything dramatic – just eat more plants!

A Simple Guide To Easy Chakra Imbalance Remedies

We know the nervous system is essential to the communication of sensations, including pain, throughout the body. In a blog post a few weeks ago, I introduced the concept of chakras, what they are, and why they are intrinsically linked with our overall well being.

Now, when your chakras are open and balanced, you are a fierce, incredible, badass, ready to take on anything! But, when your chakras are imbalanced, you might not quite be at your very best. This is because when you experience blockages in your existing and normal energy flows, things get thrown off course and your energy centers aren’t able to coordinate properly with the rest of your body. When chakras are blocked, this can affect organs and nerve bundles found in the corresponding areas on the body.

You may hear people referring to underactive or overactive chakras, which just means that things are a bit out of whack and in need of rebalancing. Here are some easy methods for chakra rebalancing that you can easily implement into your day.

Root Chakra

If your first chakra or “root chakra” is out of balance, you may be feeling disconnected and unwilling to compromise. Some describe a sensation of heaviness as if you are dragging yourself around, feeling emotionally and/or physically weighed down. Usually reconnecting with yourself through meditation is advised. I would recommend “taking 5” as often as you can – either taking 5 long, deep, grounding breaths or, when you are able to, take 5 minutes to close your eyes and really notice how and what you are feeling.

Sacral Chakra

When your sacral chakra is imbalanced, you might find yourself less enthusiastic about things you are passionate about, experiencing low libido, and even lacking a feeling of deeper connection. Focusing on fostering a healthy sex-life can help, as can showing a lot of self-care to yourself and to your body. Sometimes engaging in something creative can also help rebalance this chakra.

Solar Plexus Chakra

This third chakra of your core being off can make you feel argumentative or super shy. You may feel very defensive or attacked by things that might normally not bother you. To recenter this chakra you can try working through warrior flows, focusing on engaging your core and staying tall through your spine. Be sure to give your gut and digestive system some additional TLC as well!

Heart Chakra

The fourth chakra being imbalanced can really make you feel frazzled. It often displays itself as either a serious lack of compassion for others or as overwhelming anxiety about the well being of others. Try an open heart pose, like camel pose or cobra pose to help your heart center open up in a healthy way. I created a special Heart Opening Flow just for this chakra.

Throat Chakra

This fifth chakra can present itself as over-communicative or under-communicative, either talking way too much or not expressing yourself enough. Try concentrated and deep listening to others and work to clearly communicate your needs and feelings in a concise way.

Third Eye Chakra

Sometimes when your third eye is off, you may feel skeptical, unsure, or be less open-minded to new thoughts and opinions. Try meditative mindsets, taking just a few moments or minutes to breathe deeply. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but I find that slowing down and practicing deep breathing is beneficial for my nervous system and alignment of my sixth chakra.

Crown Chakra

The seventh chakra being out of sorts may leave you feeling disconnected to any sort of spirituality that you identify with or really detached from the world around you. Some meditative mindset moments can help, as can inversions. For a super easy inversion, try with your legs up a wall to help rebalance your crown chakra.

I’ve seen and experienced such impressive and impactful results from chakra balancing, which is what inspired me to create the 7 Day Chakra Cleanse, a course designed to give you that physical and mental reset that you have been craving!

I think chakra knowledge and understanding is so crucial to your well being, which is why I will be covering even more chakra related knowledge in my new membership program! How to Heal Your Gut: Consider Colonics

While your body has natural mechanisms and processes for detoxing, sometimes these systems can feel a bit sluggish, especially when it comes to digestion. Ultimately, poor digestion can lead to:

  • Skin trouble
  • Cramping
  • Bloating
  • Water retention
  • Brain fog
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation
  • Depression
  • Headaches and more!

There are many ways to jumpstart and clean out your digestive system, but one of my favorite methods is colon hydrotherapy.

Also referred to as a colonic, think about this as a clean flush for your gut. Similar to an enema, a colonic provider will help you get rid of built-up waste and residue by flushing your system with water. Pretty simple. And think about it, many cultures have utilized enemas, even dating back to the ancient Egyptians, to restore health, vitality, and treat illness.

I know, it’s a little gross to think about. But, isn’t the thought of junk and waste just chilling, setting up camp, and moving into your intestines and colon even more disgusting? I mean, think about the food you ate three weeks ago.

Particles of the pizza you had three weeks ago…rotting somewhere in your digestive tract is not a pleasant thought. Your digestive system isn’t built like pipes that make up the plumbing in your house. It’s not all just perfectly smooth surface area. Instead, your intestines have thousands of nooks and crannies, grooves, small pockets, and tiny spaces where toxic junk can get stuck as it moves through your digestive system.

The act of filling your bowels with clean water, holding the water for a bit to give your insides a soak, and then effectively rinsing everything out will help you eliminate some of the really old bits of waste that have made their home in the lining of your colon. Yeah, it gets a bit of a bad reputation for being “icky” but storing that toxic waste is way more disgusting and problematic.

As colonics are intended to give your body a thorough cleaning, I would advise staying very hydrated both before and after. Be sure to get some powerful probiotics in you afterward to restore a healthy bacterial balance. And while you don’t need to constantly be getting colonics, they are a really useful tool for helping your body detox and recharge, getting those stagnant bits of waste out of there!

You’re Full of SH*T: Why Prioritizing Gut Health Is Essential

I know what I am about to tell you might be a strange visual image but hear me out. Your gut is your second brain. The two organs have different, but overlapping functions to keep you healthy and happy. Everything in the human body is connected in some way, and there is no better example than the link between your brain and your gut.

If you experience any of the following on the regular:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue
  • Poor digestion
  • Bloating
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • Inflammation and joint pain

…may all be rooted in an unhealthy gut! Think about it like this – if your body is holding on to waste and toxins in your digestive system and gut, that junk is effectively circulating throughout your whole body via your bloodstream.

Our bodies are made to deal with and filter out toxins, but when waste is languishing in your intestines, colon, and digestive system due to unhealthy gut function, you are making your body work way too hard. This takes a toll over time, potentially causing all those unpleasant symptoms.

These symptoms are responses to the waste trapped in your body. When you have less waste in your digestive system all of your organs – including your brain – can spend more time operating perfectly, thereby eliminating some of those difficult symptoms caused by an unhealthy gut. The waste sitting in your body just weighs you down – literally!?

Getting your body to work better, instead of harder, requires some extra TLC for your gut. Taking steps toward better gut health includes getting good probiotics, colonics (they are not scary – I swear!), moving your body, eating a gut-friendly diet, and boosting detox functions. Taking the time to set yourself up with healthy gut treatments and adjusting your diet will do wonders for your gut and therefore your overall well being! Ensuring you have a symbiotic balance in your body starts with prioritizing your gut!

So many symptoms that people experience could be and probably are related to gut health and can be resolved with holistic care as opposed to pharmaceuticals. Not only can medication be expensive, but sometimes its side effects don’t make us feel so hot. If any of these symptoms sound familiar, I would encourage you to start by focusing on effectively healing your gut to improve your wellbeing.

I’ve been through and am still on the gut-healing journey! I’ve met so many caring, knowledgeable experts along the way, and I am so looking forward to sharing their wisdom with you. If this sounds like the type of action you want to get in on, check out my amazing new Yoga Prehab Membership (where I take time to highlight the best in holistic gut care, along with other essential wellness wisdom!

La Vie en Rose: Why You Should Be Drinking Rose Tea ASAP

Is the hype over rose-infused items qualified? Especially rose tea, I mean, is that even necessary?

In so many words, yes and definitely!

Tea made from the petals and buds of roses deserves a spot in your tea stash. I believe it also serves as a perfectly pleasant, warming, and relaxing tea for the winter season. In addition to feeling fancy and luxurious, rose tea actually has some excellent benefits for your body – 2020 and beyond!

Ingredients drawn from members of the rosa botanical family are notoriously powerful for their soothing and moisturizing qualities. Similarly to how rosehip seed oil and rosewater blends can effectively provide moisturize for combination skin, rose tea can help hydrate your skin from the inside out as well.

The antioxidants found in rosa plants are typically used to combat acne and soothe the skin in various external body-suitable products, but there are similar results can also be achieved when the rose petals and rosebuds are brewed, steeped, and consumed as a tea.

Rose tea, first of all, smells divine. Smelling and sipping it aids almost immediately in relaxation. Additionally, it can be soothing for your nervous and digestive systems, sometimes getting your digestion back in gear, and even helping to regulate imbalances in your central nervous systems.

As a digestive aid, rose tea is also effective as a detox infusion – and one that actually tastes good. I think probably we have all been there – with a tea or herbal infusion that is great for our kidneys, liver, digestion, but tastes…tough. These teas are great to get down and really get a strong cleanse, but maybe not every day.

Rose tea, on the other hand, is delicious, soothing, and a completely manageable daily detox for your body. A drink you can look forward to brewing, inhaling, and sipping, I can assure you!

Rose is also rumored to have a certain aphrodisiac quality to it, so hey, maybe it’s a good thing to try out for Valentine’s Day if nothing else?

Rose tea on its own is fairly fragrant, floral, and somewhat sweet, but you can always add a sweetener if you’d like. My choice would be honey, which always offers a nicely balanced addition of sweetness, plus antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

On its own, it is naturally decaffeinated, but you can find it mixed with black or white tea blends if you are looking for a little added kick.

Tea Sparrow has an amazing tea blend called Moments which features rosebuds, perfectly paired with a light aromatic black tea base to elevate the soft and luxurious flavor of the rose, raspberry, and subtleties of mango. It’s both warm and reminiscent of tropical flavors, making it a nice winter pick me up.

In addition to getting some new teas into your healthy, warming, delicious beverage rotation, I would love if you shared your New Year, New You goals with me on Instagram! I love answering your questions, so please give me a shout if there is anything you need to succeed.

5 Reasons You Need HIIT Training

HIIT is…what exactly?

High intensity interval training, of course! And yes, it has the potential to maximize the time you spend working out in a very, very real way. Plus, it is easy to do  – pretty much anywhere and everywhere – making it a sustainable exercise routine for anyone. Bodyweight exercises, bursts of cardio, and dynamic stretching in a HIIT workout create a quick boost in your heart rate and energy output while providing the results you want to see from your dedicated hustle!

Stimulates fat loss, maintains muscle: Losing weight might be one of your goals, but having muscle melt away is probably not. You want to stay tight and toned. But keeping your muscular strength in place while also losing weight can sometimes be a challenge.

This is one of the great things about HIIT – you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other – no trade-off involved. Whereas certain exercises, such as running every single day, may cause some muscle groups to shrink – burning calories, but also burning muscle – HIIT doesn’t present the same risk. Your heart rate and caloric burn will increase, but HIIT training is more successful in maintaining muscle while minimizing fat, especially in those more dangerous fat storage areas around your organs.

High caloric burn: The interval training and variety of exercises involved in even just 20-30 minutes of HIIT training gets your heart rate going and increases the number of calories that your body is burning. Typically, as you build your strength, these workouts can become faster-paced, with little to no rest time. All of this helps you maintain your caloric burn and may also help prevent plateaus in weight loss and muscle building.

Beneficial for heart health: Getting some diversity in your heart rate is actually great for your cardiovascular system! Elevating your heart rate during exercise can have long term benefits in lowering your resting heart rate and blood pressure over time. The duration and range of intensity in HIIT workouts has been proven to be more effective in increasing cardiovascular strength when compared to high endurance intensity training alone.

Increases metabolism: Research shows that with HIIT, our bodies may resort more quickly to burning fat, as opposed to carbs, in the body while also increasing metabolism. The diversity of body weight and cardio in HIIT workouts boosts metabolic rates for a longer period of time post-workout, meaning that you’re benefiting from burning more calories throughout your whole day.

It’s like getting the benefits of 2 hours in the gym in just a 20 minutes session.

Convenient: HIIT workouts and exercises can be done anytime, anywhere. Using just bodyweight you can complete a short, but powerful HIIT workout that will maximize calories burned while maintaining strength and muscle gain.

Be sure to stay tuned, tribe! I’ll be launching the Yoga Prehab with Tristan Gatto membership in a few weeks, which will include Physical Therapy-based workouts, yoga flows, and HIIT that will help YOU get all of the benefits of quick, body-saving methods in the comfort of your own home (or hotel – I see you, business travelers)!

What Are Chakras And How Are They Related To Your Wellbeing?

So, you have probably heard the word “chakra” before – am I right? It’s definitely a word that gets thrown around a lot, but what are they, and what are they connected to exactly?

The word chakra (pronounced cha-kra) in Sanskrit means a “disk” or “orb,” and refers to the seven energy centers that are found in the human body, along the spine and up through the top of the head. These energy centers not only correspond to emotional aspects of our lives, to organs and certain areas of the body, but are also closely intertwined with our nervous systems. Chakras are essentially points at which human bodies have large networks of nerve bundles.

Even though the concept of chakras was derived from Vedic teachings dating back to 50 B.C. and from historical Ayurvedic practice, it actually blends perfectly with what modern, Western medicine knows today to be true. Vedic teachings illustrate the way in which chakras, when open, create a healthy flow of energy that creates balance, overall wellness, and vitality in a person. These areas of chakra placement are actually correlated to key points in your nervous system. Cool, I know!

Now that you know how they are related to an intrinsic part of your body – the nervous system – let’s cover where and what the seven chakras actually are…

Root Chakra

Also known as the Muladhara (moo-lah-dar-ah) or the first chakra, it can be thought of as “rooting” you to safety and security, and is found in the area around the lowest part of your spine, near your bladder, and colon. Like roots that hold a tree in the ground, the root chakra is all about standing tall and proud as we exist in the world. When this chakra is open, you may feel brave, safe, secure, and more ready for new things.

Sacral Chakra

Found below your navel, but above your pubic bone the Svadhisthana (swa-dhi-shtah-na), or second chakra, is the center of your sexual and creative energies. When this chakra is open, you may feel extra passionate and possess a strong willingness or drive to express yourself in creative forms.

Solar Plexus Chakra

The Manipura (ma-ni-poo-rah), third chakra is found in your core, between your navel and your breastbone. The word Manipura in Sanskrit translates to “luminous gem” and is believed to ignite your personal source of power. This makes sense, as when we think about core strength we think about the part of our body that gives us the most power, as well as the ability to stand strong and tall. When this chakra is open you may feel confident and strong in all you do!

Heart Chakra

Located in the center of your chest, nearly in the middle of your spine is the fourth chakra, anahata (ah-na-ha-tah). This fourth chakra connects the emotional, physical, mindful, and spiritual qualities of a person. It also acts as a source of connection between what are thought of as the three “lower” energies, chakras 1-3, and the “higher” energies, chakras 5-7. When your heart chakra is open you may feel very connected to others, open to love, and more drawn toward compassion.

Throat Chakra

The Vishuddha (vi-shoo-dah) chakra is the fifth chakra, and encompasses the area around your throat. This chakra is associated with communication and vocal expression. This chakra also includes the thyroid, mouth, jaw, and tongue. When your throat chakra is open you may feel more empowered to share opinions, communicate openly, and speak your truth more freely.

Third Eye Chakra

The sixth chakra, Ajna (ah-jnah), is between the eyebrows, in the space between your eyes. Ajna is the energy center that guides your intuition, or your power to know and perceive things in and about the world. When this chakra is open you may be more inclined to listen to your intuition and allow your internal knowledge to guide you through the world.

Crown Chakra

The seventh chakra, Sahaswara (sa-ha-srA-ra), can be found at the crown, or very top of your head. This is the chakra of spiritual thought and connection with ourselves, the world around us, and divinity or higher spirituality. When this chakra is open – which can be difficult to maintain all the time – you may feel at your most creative capacity, capable of feeling your highest level of understanding and spirituality.

Keep It Tidy
I’m not suggesting that you clean your place meticulously every single day, but sometimes clutter has a way of making you feel more frazzled or overwhelmed than is necessary. Do your best to keep your spaces organized through the week, which will free up more time and energy to focus on your goal and even spend some extra time on very necessary and well-deserved self-care!

Stay Engaged
Forming new habits always works a little better if you are able to stay engaged. I’ve never felt motivated to stick with something if I find myself super bored, so I know you might find it challenging too! If you can learn something new that helps you with your wellness journey, that will keep it interesting for 30 days and beyond!
